Students inspire fashion trends

When walking across campus some many may notice the signs, buildings or nature, but Kayla Wilson notices fashion, which was her inspiration to start KampusTrends.
Wilson started a production company, called iKare, with her friends. They replaced the C in “care” and “campus” to stand for the K in Wilson’s first name. Wilson posts photos of students whose fashion trends stand out to her and posts them on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag “KampusTrends.” She also includes students’ favorite store.
“There are so many different styles on campus,” said Suhaiba Mohiuddin, a junior and contributor of KampusTrends. “There is not like one trend, so it is nice to be able to showcase peoples’ own personal styles. We aren’t trying to show runway styles, but everyone’s individual style.”
“I look for people who are over-looked, people who deserve to be showcased,” said Wilson.
Of her own style, Wilson said she likes to have fun and try different things. Her favorite store is Asos, a U.K. store, because it has a variety of styles and is attentive to the college student budget.
KampusTrends has also started expanding to reflect other campuses beyond Augustana’s. Students send Wilson a picture of what they are wearing that day and Wilson edits it and posts it.
When choosing a KampusTrends photo of the day, Wilson and Mohiuddin look for individuals that have put in effort, whether that is some form of diversity, dressing up for a holiday or accessorizing.
“I look for people who are actually showing their own style,” said Mohiuddin, “not something they saw in a magazine.”
“KampusTrends promotes unique and creative styles,” said senior Carmen Jones, another contributor. “It is about finding something that represents the individual without the putting on a show. It is very impromptu and relaxed.”
Wilson and her team have also begun work on a production called Talent Tuesdays.  As with KampusTrends, the main goal is to highlight diversity; examples include dancers, singers and artists. They aim to highlight those whose talent is under the radar, but strive to find individuals who are passionate and following their dreams.
