Habitat for Humanity heads to Denver

The Augustana Habitat for Humanity chapter will be taking a trip during the first week of Spring Break to Denver, Colorado to help build houses partnered with the Denver Habitat chapter.
Augustana Habitat has been building a team of 11 to 12 people and coordinating with the Quad Cities Habitat and Denver Habitat to plan a trip. During the first week of Spring Break, the team will drive three six-person vans filled with people and supplies to Denver.
While in Denver, the team will be working with Denver Habitat, but they are not sure what jobs they will be doing. Augustana Habitat for Humanity President Laura Beitler said, “There’s usually several different house builds going on in a given area, and each of them are kind of at different stages of being completed.”
They could be working from the start of a house, like breaking ground, to the end of the house, like painting. “There was one of the Habitat homes that burned down, or got burned inside,” Beitler said, “So we had demolish all of it, which was pretty different from what we normally do.”
The team will spend the week staying in a church in Denver while eating at their various worksites all provided by Denver Habitat. “We are going to team up with a Habitat affiliate there, and kind of just help build homes in that area,” Beitler said.
Ultimately, the goal of the trip is to help Denver Habitat get a few steps closer to providing a home for an underprivileged family. The Denver Habitat for Humanity website describes their goal as helping “low-income homeowners with much-needed home restoration so that they can continue to live in a safe and affordable home.”
The trip has a good purpose at its core, but it’s not all work. Beitler mentioned that the team’s work week allows for one day of city sightseeing on the Monday they are there. “This year we’re planning on renting snowshoes and going hiking,” Beitler said.
The Spring Break trip is an annual event for Augustana Habitat and is open for all students involved in Habitat or not.
