Water polo club amps up for final tournament

Founded six years ago, water polo club is now looking to do well in their final tournament of the men’s season part of the club.
The team has so far competed in two tournaments and the last tournament will be at Grinnell, Iowa this upcoming weekend.
Currently, the team is co-ed and has 15 players. They compete with other water polo clubs at other colleges in the Midwest, though mainly in Minnesota or Iowa.
Women’s water polo club president Meghan McLean said the team is having a strong season.
“Our season has been one of the most successful seasons we have had in a while,” McLean said. “We currently have a record of 6-2, which means we are currently seeded in third place for conference.”
For the club, fall is the men’s season, while spring is the womens season. However, the lines are a bit blurred as men and women can compete together according to men’s water polo club president, Jake Rancic.
“One cool aspect to our conference is that girls can come with and play on the men’s teams during their season,” Rancic said.
For Rancic, being in water polo has been a completely positive experience here at Augustana.
“Being an Augustana club athlete is a great experience,” Rancic said. “Not only can you stay involved in a sport you love, but you also have more freedom and less time commitment when compared to varsity athletic teams.”
Outside of the water polo competitions, McLean said the team bonds through different experiences.
“This past weekend we had a tournament in Minnesota and we stopped at the Mall of America and explored,” said McLean.
Both presidents said they plan to expand their club and hope to reach out to high schools.
