What was supposed to be a quick turnaround turned into a waiting game. After last week’s rain forced a postponement, the Augustana men’s golf team had a few extra days to sit with its preparation ahead of the CCIW Preview. Instead of disrupting their rhythm, the delay gave the team some time to clean up details, stay sharp and enter a key conference meeting with a little more clarity.
However, the athletes will arrive with momentum already on their side as the Vikings are coming off a win at the Monmouth Fighting Scots Invite, where First-Year Calvin Short led the way with an individual first-place finish.
Now, the CCIW Preview offers an early look at the conference field and a chance to show that last week’s performance was a sign of what this team is building toward.
The delay between meets gave the team a break it rarely has during a busy stretch of the season. With the CCIW Preview pushed back, preparation became less about squeezing everything in and more about refining the details. Players were able to spend additional time studying the course, adjusting their approach and settling into a more focused rhythm heading into competition.
That shift didn’t go unnoticed within the team. What could have disrupted momentum instead created a more relaxed, confident mindset, allowing players to feel better prepared than they might have on a tighter schedule. For many, including senior Noah Ehlenbach, the added time became a quiet advantage, changing how they approached the week leading up to the meet.
“I don’t think it affected anything too much,” Ehlenbach said. “Though, just seeing the course is always an advantage to see it, pick your start lines, get a feel for the course, and I think we had a lot of ideas based on what we’ve seen. It was just good to get out there and see some of the holes that we were a little bit confused about, and then go from there.”
The Vikings placed third at the CCIW Preview, which might not jump off the page at first glance, but within the team, it carried a different meaning. Competing against conference opponents, the result offered a clear picture of where they stand and how close the gap really is. Even without their strongest performance, the team remained within striking distance of the top.
That perspective has shifted the focus moving forward. Rather than seeing a separation between themselves and the top teams, the takeaway has been about the small margins that define outcomes.
Short sees that a few cleaner holes, fewer costly mistakes and more consistency around the course could be the difference between finishing near the top and finishing at it.
“We can compete with anybody,” Short said. “I don’t think we had our best stuff at the preview, and we weren’t, but we still weren’t that far off from being first. So we just got to shave a couple shots here and there, whether it’s around the green or eliminating the doubles and triples and just again, grinding out a lot for par.”
The focus will first shift to the Viking Invitational, where the team will have a chance to compete on its home course against a competitive field for the final time this season. With multiple teams coming in, the event presents another early test, not just of performance, but of how the group stacks up against a mix of familiar and new opponents.
It’s also an opportunity to build something heading into the postseason. Junior Jake Stefanowicz sees that strong play this weekend could reinforce the confidence the team has been developing and set the tone for what’s ahead at the conference tournament.
“It will be a competitive field,” Stefanowicz said. “We have a couple [of] teams coming, and I think it’s just going to be another way to showcase that we’re a really good team, and that we’re going to dominate on our home course as well, and that builds that confidence as well, going into the conference tournament.”
With the conference tournament on the horizon, the focus now turns to finishing strong and improving on last year’s result, where Augie placed sixth out of nine.
