The Observer sat down with junior Pierson Wofford and talked about the team’s goals as well as the implications of his recent injury.

1. Last year, the team was very successful. How was it getting second in Nationals?
It’s a tough feeling, we really were so close with just a few small mistakes. I believe we have cleaned up those mistakes and grew stronger. Now we are ready to head back to Salem.
2. Coming off of last year, the team had high hopes. What was the team’s goals for this year?
Our goals are always the same. We want to compete at a high level and win as much as possible. We really would love the opportunity to go back to the National Championship.
3. Who were you playing when you got injured? What happened?
We were playing the University of Illinois. I drove to the basket and drew a foul. When I landed, I turned and fell at a bad angle, which tore my ACL, meniscus, and fractured my knee.
4. How will your absence on the court affect the team?
The team will be just fine. We have a next man up policy on the court. More people will just have to make contributions to fill the numbers I left.
5. What are the team’s plans to fill your place?
As a whole, it will be a group effort. Not just one person will be able to do it, but a collective group of guys will be able to.
6. Is there any chance that you will be able to play by the end of the season?
Unfortunately, it’s not likely. I’m scheduled for surgery sometime around Christmas.
7. How has the team’s goals changed since your injury?
The goals never change. We believe that we are a good team because of our depth, and that will get them through this without me.
 8. How are you contributing to the team after your injury?
Nothing physically, but I’m still a leader vocally. We have a lot of young guys and people who are coming into the fold. The faster I can help teach them our system, the better they will be, and the better we become as a team.
