Review: Grammy Awards surprise music fans

The Grammy Awards aired on Feb. 8, and they brought surprises with them.
Sam Smith was the night’s big winner taking home four of the awards including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album.
Smith gave a beautiful acceptance speech thanking his ex-boyfriend for inspiring the album.
“I want to thank the man that this record is about, thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys,” Smith said during is acceptance speech for Record of the year.
If that doesn’t give us all hope that our break ups may be worth it, nothing will.
Smith was originally nominated for six Grammys, only losing Album of the year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Among the most exciting events to happen within this year’s Grammy awards was Beck winning Album of the Year and taking out many fan favorites such as Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Pharrell Williams.
The most talked about event of the night happened when Beck won the much sought after Grammy for Album of the year.
The surprise didn’t come when Beck won, but when he came to the stage to give his acceptance speech, he had another performer meet him at the stage.
Kanye West was pretending to cut Beck off, as he did when Taylor Swift won the 2009 Best Female Video at the Video Music Awards.
A lot of people are complaining that Kanye was just craving attention, or if he was trying to make light of a situation he had gotten himself into in 2009. Either way, the Grammys was not the place to do this.
One of the best performances of the night goes to John Mayer and Ed Sheeran.
The duo performed Sheeran’s hit song “Thinking Out Loud.”
John Mayer took control of the guitar, while Ed Sheeran took on the vocals. This made people beg for the combination to create an album in the near future.
Another deserving award was given to St. Vincent for Best Alternative Rock Album. Her self-titled album won over critics and audiences last year, as it is a futuristic dance album carrying themes relevant to the digital age.
Old favorite musicians were also present, including Prince in a bright orange jumpsuit, and Buddy Guy, a blues guitarist who won for his lifetime achievement.
Overall, the Grammys can be seen as another successful award show. The award show was also full of unnecessary drama, thanks to Kanye West, but overall, the awards were given to deserving performers.
