Camp Kesem hosts “Celebrity Scoop Night”

Camp Kesem Augustana partnered with Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream and Treatery to host a “Celebrity Scoop Night” fundraiser on Monday, Dec. 9.
The “Celebrity Scoop Night” is a fundraiser that allows members of local schools and organizations to be featured as “Celebrity Scoopers”, where they serve Maggie Moo’s ice cream to its customers.
“This is a great fundraising opportunity for the organization,” said Dimock, Camp Kesem volunteer coordinator. “20 percent of all proceeds tonight will go to Camp Kesem.”
Camp Kesem is an organization of free summer camps and social circles for kids who have or had a parent with cancer. The organization is run by college students. Camp Kesem’s motto, “Where magic happens,” has expanded rapidly with 3,000-plus kids experiencing Kesem magic each summer, and 50-plus colleges nationwide.
Augustana joined the Camp Kesem family in 2011 and has been participating in fundraisers ever since. In the summer of 2013, Camp Kesem Augustana served 55 campers and hopes to welcome 75 campers for the July 20-26, 2014 camp.
“We help kids whose parents have cancer by providing them with a place to feel joy and freedom,” Dimock said. “It means a lot to see the smiles on their faces, with all they go through.”
Katie Lane, a member of the “Moo Crew” at Maggie Moo’s, admired the opportunity to get involved.
“It’s always great to see companies getting involved with charity work,” said Lane. “We try to help out any way we can.”
Not only does Camp Kesem receive the benefits of this fundraiser; Maggie Moo’s sees a business increase as well.
“The ‘Celebrity Scoop Night’ helps both parties,” Lane said. “We help out an organization and in turn we have an increase in business. Tonight was a great night to do this (fundraiser) because not many customers normally come into an ice cream place on a Monday night in the winter.”
This is not the first time Maggie Moo’s has supported a local organization. Earlier this year, it hosted “Celebrity Scoop Night” for Hopewell Elementary School in Bettendorf, St. Ambrose National Honor Society, and North Scott Dance Marathon.
“We really appreciate Maggie Moo’s for giving us the opportunity to host this event here,” Dimock said. “Without them, fundraising would be much more difficult.”
