The Augustana men’s indoor track and field team snapped North Central’s record of 15 straight CCIW championship titles by edging out the Cardinals to take the Vikings first ever championship victory on Feb. 27 in Naperville, Ill.
With a two-day finals, Augustana exited the track on Feb. 26 with 46.5 points trailing North Central’s 66.5 points, making it a 20 point margin between the top two schools.
Head coach Paul Olsen credits junior runner Issac Smith, who won outstanding athlete of the meet honors, for helping the team demolish the 20 point gap by securing 14 points for the Vikings. Smith won an individual event, helped win one relay, scored runner-up, and came in second in another individual event.
The Vikings second day come back clinched the win for the team in the indoor championship.
