Women’s tennis is currently 9-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, as they just played their final conference match against North Park University on Tuesday.
“The conference schedule has been fine this year,” said head coach Jon Miedema. “We’ve had a lot more home matches in conference which has been fun.”
With the championships coming up but also with the season in general, there are goals that are hoped to be accomplished. The goals the team has for this season include winning conference, winning the automatic qualifier in the spring, a GPA goal, and over 20 wins.
Last year, the team beat all competitors in the regular season 6-0 and finished second in the conference tournament. The team did well last year, and that hasn’t changed this year.
“I think the team’s doing well. Conference championships are a month away and if we keep working hard we’ll be in good shape,” said Miedema.
Each player has an important role on the team. First-year Mollie Magee mentions that her motivation for conference is to be a team player.
“I want to help my team out as much as I can,” said Magee. “By me doing as well as I can, it will help our team win conference which is the ultimate goal. “
Returning players are thinking about what they will do the same or differently going into the championships.
“This year is going to be tough like last year,” said sophomore Lauren Goggin. “I know my mindset. We can compete with anyone in front of us and will continue to have a confident mindset. But I think the key will be patience in every single point, fighting till the end.”
Overall, Miedema is happy the way the team has come together and been able to step up. The new girls and underclassmen on the team have made a positive impact.
“We’ve had a lot of new players whether freshmen or sophomores, step in and play well, and play a big role on the team” said Miedema. Going into the tournament, the players will have to try their best, but they don’t have much to worry about even though there are some changes.
Coach Miedema recalls that last year, “The team went into the tournament with a lot of number 1 seeds,” said Miedema. “This year we`ll have some first, second, and third seeds so it’ll be a tougher draw, but I still feel confident we will perform just as well or better.”
The championships this year will be held October 16-18. Heading into the tournament, Dana Goggin is 6-0 in the CCIW and Lauren Goggin, Magee, and Miranda Pence are all 5-1. As a team, Augustana is currently ranked fourth in conference with a 4-2 record.
