The Observer sat down with senior lacrosse player Olivia Mayer to discuss the two CCIW Offensive Player of the Week awards she earned in two consecutive weeks.
1. How did it feel to earn CCIW player of the week twice?
“It was an honor to get player of the week. I’m grateful I could represent the team in such a positive way. We all work so hard to be as successful as we can.”
2. What has it been like playing for the basketball team that made Augustana history and coming into the lacrosse season?
“It was a great basketball season we had so much fun and worked so hard and earned the results and achievements we reached this year. Coming into this lacrosse season, I do feel like I was motivated from all the success we had in basketball. Hard work and success is contagious.”
3. What are your goals for this lacrosse season? What are some of your team goals?
“My goals this season are just to help the team be as successful as possible in whatever ways I can. I want to push myself outside my comfort zone and help my teammates challenge themselves also. Our goal is to win conference and continue the Augustana culture we have had over the past years.”
4. What was it like to make it to nationals in lacrosse?
“It was very exciting to make it to the national tournament the past few years. It is such a great opportunity to play the amazing teams we go up against on a national level and continue to see what kind of potential there is for our team.”
5. What is the team like? What is your favorite aspect of the team?
“Our team is different from previous years. We are very young but we have a lot of fight. We like to have fun and we do a lot of dancing and singing. My favorite thing about us I think is our fight and our persistence. We have faced a lot of adversity this year and we just keep pushing through and fighting.”
6. Tell me about your career at Augie. What have been some highlights in both basketball and lacrosse?
“This is my fourth year playing both basketball and lacrosse. There have been so many highlights over these past three and a half years from the amazing friendships I’ve formed to record breaking seasons and being there when teammates also break individual records. I have learned so much about myself, teamwork and what it takes to be successful.”
