Although starting their season 0-4, the Augustana women’s lacrosse team is looking forward to making improvements throughout the rest of the season. The first three losses were played in California over spring break, while the fourth game was at Concordia.
Senior Olivia Mayer said that although the team knows they will not have a perfect season due to their early losses, the team is going to use these losses as references to what they need to work on.
“We have a lot of work to do, but it’s encouraging that we are making progress,” Mayer said.
The team is looking forward to playing their first home games of the season. Senior Hanna Gobeille said that the team likes the comfort and support from friends and family.
“I think that where we are at right now puts us in a good position to do better and work together more and to come together as a team and to play together as we have in years past,” Gobeille said.
The team’s main focus is playing as a team and having connection.
Also, this is now head coach Caroline Durham’s first year as head coach at Augustana. She soon discovered the team’s goal of togetherness and she has continued to make this concept the key focus for the team.
“It’s the same common theme for us this year that is going to help us establish how successful we can be if we all buy into this idea of oneness and also being able to help each other and critique each other,” Durham said.
Since there are many new and young players on the team this year, Durham acknowledges that the team has to establish these connections quicker than in some past years. Durham wants the team “to create a support system in terms of feedback and helping each other.”
The team hopes to win the CCIW title at the end of the season. They have won the conference title for the past three seasons and hope to make this year the fourth in a row.
They will play on Saturday against Albion College at 1 p.m. at the Thorson-Lucken Field.
