Augustana’s Dance Company aims to inspires girls to express themselves by taking full advantage of their freedom of expression. The group performed their spring show “Dance to Inspire” on April 18.
The show consisted of many dances that have accumulated over the last few months. President of the company, Senior Alicia Winn expresses how excited the company was to perform.
“The Dance Company was super excited to show everyone how hard we’ve worked since January,” Winn said.
The company consists of 17 girls this show season, and all of the dances were choreographed by the members of the company.
This performance was special because of the addition of children.
“We partnered with Davenport Junior Theatre School of Dance to host a kids clinic,” Winn said. “Children in the community learned a jazz or lyrical piece and performed it during our show.”
Working with children fits into Augustana Dance Company’s goals of inspiring younger generations.
Dana Buhorn, a first year, says Dance Company really helped her transition into college life.
“The girls were helpful, understanding and fun to be around,” Buhorn said. “I love Dance Company because it gives me an opportunity to express myself, while having a great time with a group of girls who I can call my family.”
The Dance Company performed a variety of styles. These styles included jazz, contemporary and hip hop. These displayed the multiple talents of the Dance Company girls.
A popular dance within the audience was “Nothing Can Change This Love.” This dance was performed after a slideshow was dedicated to Alicia Winn, as this was her last Dance Company performance.
The dance was choreographed by Winn, and was a dedication to what the Winn has been working her senior year to achieve.
This dance showed the powerful movement of dance combined with the dancers’ team cohesion.
