The men’s soccer team had a fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s event, and the money they raised was the second most of any team.
New men’s soccer coach Mick Regan was the catalyst in the team raising money for the event, himself raising $380.
Regan was one of the organizers of the “Think Pink” week at Ashford University, his old school where he coached both men’s and women’s soccer.
The event at Ashford was centered on breast cancer awareness, while the St. Baldrick’s event raises money for childhood cancer.
The original target dollar amount that the team set to raise was $1,000, but the team ended up raising over $2,000 for the event.
Quite a few players on the team shaved their heads at the event as well.
Junior Adam Witucki raised $245 dollars for the event, the most for any player on the team.
He cited the fact that Regan’s family was personally affected by cancer in raising the money and the team’s participation in the event.
“He wanted us to do this fundraiser because he has had cancer affect his life and his mom and players on the team have been affected by it or know people that have been affected by it as well,” Witucki said. “He also wanted us to just do something good for the community.”
Witucki said a lot of the donations came through due to posting on social media and spreading awareness through online channels.
Many of the players relatives helped out in raising the money as well.
“I think it was just basic and not a contest, but a lot of people knew relatives that they thought would help out. A lot of it was posting through Facebook asking people to help out,” Witucki said. “It was also trying to set that dollar amount and publicizing that they would shave their head for the cause.”
