Over spring break, Augustana College’s choir and symphonic band set out on two separate tours across the United States, continuing a proud tradition that dates back to the 1930s. While the band traveled along the East Coast, the choir ventured through the Midwest—performing in beautiful churches, engaging with local communities and representing Augustana’s vibrant musical excellence.
“Augustana is one of the few small colleges in the country with high-level performing ensembles that regularly tour,” Jorge Mendez, a senior majoring in theatre and communication studies , said. “This tradition started almost a century ago, and the fact that it still thrives speaks volumes about how much we value the arts.”
For the students involved, the tour is more than a series of performances—it’s a full, immersive experience that blends music, travel and personal growth. Choir member Jon Hansen, a junior majoring in vocal music education, recently completed his third tour. From March 22 to 29, the choir performed six concerts in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado, including stops in Lincoln, Topeka, Denver and Boulder.
One of the most memorable venues was Bethany Lutheran Church at Bethany College, where their director, Dr. Jon Hurty, earned his undergraduate degree.
“It was really special to see how much he still appreciates that school,” Hansen said. “He shared stories and memories that made me think about the ones I’m creating here at Augustana.”
Touring also brings unexpected moments of beauty and connection. In Boulder, Colorado, the choir had a free day to explore. Hansen spent the afternoon hiking mountain trails with friends to catch the sunset.
“It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen,” Hansen said. “I’ll never forget it.”
Though tour days are long and can be exhausting, Hansen wouldn’t change a thing.
“It’s like a vacation where I get to travel, sightsee and sing. Even if we don’t know anyone in the audience, we still give it everything,” Hansen said. “The energy is always high, and I’m proud of the sound we created together.”
Meanwhile, on the East Coast, the Symphonic Band toured and performed three concerts. Junior Adi Walker, a biology major, has been a member of the band for three years and plays the trombone. Having previously toured Japan and the Midwest, she knows how impactful these experiences can be.
“This year’s tour gave us a lot of time on the road, which actually helped us bond,” Walker said. “It’s funny—these are people I rehearse with all the time, but I hadn’t really gotten to know them personally until this trip.”
Beyond musicianship, the tour experience fosters friendship, team spirit and lasting memories. It encourages students to grow outside of the classroom and form deeper connections within their ensembles.
“These experiences not only strengthen students’ musical talents, but they also represent the heart of Augustana’s community spirit: a campus that travels, grows and sings as one,” Hansen said.
