Academic stress is one of the largest factors that impacts students’ well-being, which is why Augustana should implement a pass/fail grading system in times of stress. Having an option like a pass/fail system would alleviate a significant portion of students’ stress and worry.
A pass/fail system would allow students to either pass or fail a course, rather than receiving a specific letter grade. The most beneficial effect that a system like this would have for students is lowering stress levels, which would help increase energy, promote better sleep, and put them in a better mood.
By not having to worry about earning a specific grade, students have more time to focus on extracurricular activities and jobs, both of which focus on skills that are not often taught in a classroom but are usually needed in the workforce. Participating in activities outside of school work also helps students figure out what they like and who they are.
Only having to worry about passing a class rather than achieving a certain grade would also encourage students to engage more with what their professor is teaching and the material, rather than just memorizing and taking notes.
According to Gerald E. Knesek in “Why focusing on grades is a barrier to learning”, when students are focused on getting a specific letter grade, there is no longer an emphasis on learning.
“When I encounter students after they have graduated, they almost always remember what grade they received in my class; yet when I ask about what concepts they learned, they hesitate before answering,” Knesek said.
When students have more freedom to engage with their learning material rather than memorizing to do well on a test, they actually absorb the information they are being taught and can apply it better.
Students might also be more inclined to take classes outside of their majors or comfort zone since they would not have to worry about their GPA being negatively affected if the topic does not come naturally to them. This would help students gain new perspectives and knowledge.
A pass/fail grading system could potentially cause students to become unmotivated and hinder their success, but being in college involves learning accountability and how to be kind to yourself when a mistake is made.
Some may argue that a student may use a pass/fail course as an excuse to not do their work. However, it will then serve as a lesson and teach them that their education is in their own hands and that it is their responsibility to advocate for themselves. Some students abusing the system does not mean that it would not be helpful for other students overall.
By only passing or failing as opposed to receiving a letter grade, students might struggle to figure out what areas they need to improve in. However, professors would likely still give feedback which would help students figure out where they need extra help.
Even though grades provide incentive for success, students having less stress is more important than anything else. A grade is just a grade and should not dictate a person’s happiness levels, and if having a pass/fail grading system can help students manage their stress levels, then it is necessary.
