Black Widow: A review
October 10, 2021
Much like the deadly insect that shares her name, Black Widow, also known as Natasha Romanoff, is stealthy and lethal. A member of the avengers, Nathasha is well deserving of a backstory. ‘Black Widow’ is rated PG 13 and stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour. If you haven’t seen this film already, Disney Plus will make it available on October 6.
Featuring strong women and the strength of family, Black Widow is a must-see. OSL selected Black Widow to show on campus “because it was a blockbuster movie that shows the true power of what a family can do together,” said Niko Ragano, tasked with overseeing the Black Widow event this past weekend.
Released on July 9, the movie is a great success. According to the Observer, “Black Widow is currently the highest-grossing domestic movie of 2021 with $181.5 million in the United States and the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide with $371 million.” Directed by Cate Shortland, the movie is a women empowerment story directed by a powerful female. Having that powerful female energy is amazing for this movie dedicated to showing the importance of having powerful women as main characters.
The movie opens in Ohio in 1995 on a young family with two girls named Natasha and Yelena and their parents Alexei and Melina. Throughout the movie the assassins travel to Budapest, Cuba and parts of Russia. Viewers get a glimpse into the life of Natasha before joining S.H.I.E.L.D and how her family dynamic influences her choices later in life.
Most Marvel movies have a plot that contains a love interest or an awakening of some sorts and dont include a lot of key sequences that audiences can relate to, like struggling family relationships. Black Widow strays from this pattern and deals with tough topics such as free will and the discovery of how families can come back together after traumatic events. Each scene in the movie runs smoothly and keeps the audience glued to their seats.
The main theme is family and the importance of believing in them even when they are at their worst. This film introduces Yelena, which ties into the dramatic aspect within the bonds of her family as it was an unexpected twist. Yelena is a loyal sister and an overall hilarious character. However, no character is without a shining moment. The cast and crew worked amazingly well together and succeeded at maintaining a very well done Marvel movie.
Black Widow is extremely well made and contains an amazing cast and crew with an even better plot. Questioning the true value of free will, this movie has it all: action, drama and adventure. Even though the story features unfathomable technology and the turbulent life of assassins, the movie is still very relatable because the relationships between the characters are so strong. Natasha’s long-awaited origin story is worth the wait, and fans can finally see a family of lethal characters brought to life on screen.
