Saturday evening the Augustana College Men’s Soccer team took Carroll University into over time as the Vikings took the win in the first 18 seconds of the overtime period.
The match began with Carroll possessing in Augustana’s defensive half with a couple of opportunities created by Carroll’s Senior Captain Shea Connell.
“We knew that they had that tall striker,” Senior captain Matt Allen said. “That guy was definitely a problem for us. We prepared for how to deal with him and his size and laying it off to the side. We worked on that and I think we did a pretty good job of shutting him down.”
The Vikings managed to attack and began to generate chances, creating opportunities against the Carroll goal. Connell continued to dominate over the Viking’s defense but was unable to find a shot on goal.
With a little over 20 minutes left in the first half, the first yellow card of many was issued to Carroll’s Issey Valadez. Then a couple minutes later another card was issued towards Carroll for a slide tackle from behind.
“I know it’s a part of the game and the past few years I’ve always been fouled a lot so I’m pretty used to it,” Allen said. “I just take it as a win for the team. We just get to get a free kick and move the team up the field so I just focus on the actual game.”
The Pioneers continued to knock on the Vikings goal with shots either going wide or saved by Senior Goalkeeper Jeremy Klaber.
But both captains, Allen and Salah Aglaf, were able to create multiple breakaways and bring it far into their offensive third testing the Pioneer keeper.
With not much time left in the first half, Aglaf stole the ball away from the middle of the field where he passed wide to Allen who crossed into the box where junior Justin Murphy’s header found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.
Murphy had yet another chance on the Carroll goal but his shot was saved by their first year keeper, Tyler Hanson. The Vikings carried their 1-0 lead into half time.
Tensions rose in the second half and the physical intensity increased. A small altercation between Hanson and Augie first-year Joaquin Miranda, ended in another yellow card issued to Miranda.
There were a total of seven yellow cards issued in the game, five being in the second half.
The Vikings struggled giving up multiple free kicks outside of the box but every attempt was caught by Klaber. The half continued with both teams having an even number of opportunities on goal but with around 20 minutes left in the match, Carroll was granted a penalty kick.
The penalty was scored by first-year Ryan Coughlin tying the game 1-1. The second half continued on with both teams fighting hard to score.
“There were some things that just went against us but we powered through it. We just kept working, we just kept trying to score,” Klaber said.
The clock ran out of time and with the score being tied; the teams prepared for overtime.
Overtime began and 18 seconds into overtime Aglaf played the ball into Allen who scored and finished the game with an Augustana 2-1 win. “We knew we were gonna win the game right away,” Klaber said.
Augie brought their record to 3-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in confernece play.
The Viking’s next match is a home game against Wheaton at 7:30 on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Thorson- Lucken Field.
