Lights are strung at 3312 7th Ave for the holiday season. Seniors Cassidy Foley and Dana Burhorn decorated their off campus home to show off their Christmas spirit.
With upwards to 12 strings of lights and an inflatable penguin, Foley and Burhorn tried to compete with their neighbors who also decorated for the holidays. According to Foley, their neighbors started hanging Christmas lights outside and they thought “we have to out decorate them right now,” Foley said.
Foley and Burhorn knew their indoor decorations outdid the Augustana community, so they decided to show that on the outside too. According to Foley, the two girls sent an email to their landlord saying “this is an emergency, our neighbors hung up Christmas lights and we need to too, and then he gave us a bag full of like 10 strands of Christmas lights the next day,” Foley said.
Burhorn thinks that their decorations go above and beyond that of the traditional Augustana student. Some of her friends have Christmas trees, but no one goes to the extremes they do.
“We decorate how your parents decorate,” Foley said. Everything is transformed for Christmas at 3312 7th Ave,
“Like I’m talking we cleared our shelves and put snowman knickknacks on our shelves. I’ve never seen anyone else do that,” Foley said. The girls even have snowman towels for the season.
Regardless, the girls think that they lost the lights competition with their neighbors. Foley chalks up their loss to their neighbors decorated trees around their house.
Beyond the decorations, the girls like to eat Christmas cookies and blast Christmas music all season long.
“We have a bunch of Christmas cookies, we were going to make them but our parents just made them for us,” Burhorn said.
