Currently at a 3-5 record, the women’s volleyball team is preparing for their back to back games against Central and Dominican this Friday. The team has some experience in playing both competitors and hopes to have an edge on their strategies.
“Our goals against Central and Dominican are to really just play our game. We’re a very aggressive team so we want to make sure we come out swinging hard right away and moving our feet quick to pick up anything our blocks can’t reach. We also want to make sure we’re loud and kind of obnoxious. Volleyball is a mental game and if you’re the quieter team you sometimes need to work even harder,” said senior and team captain, Maissie Musick.
Even though the team is playing back to back games, their training has made them prepared for their upcoming matches. Senior and team captain, Emily Westermeyer said,
“Playing two games back to back is both motivating and stressful. It allows us to stay warm and keep our momentum from the previous game but we have to be sure we change our mindset and strategy to be successful against the next team. We pride ourselves on being very conditioned, therefore playing back to back is not much of a challenge for us.”
Overall, the team is excited and prepared for their matches against Central and Dominican. The freshmen, while not being on the team for very long, are looking forward to what the season holds for the team. Freshman player, Jessica Nguyen said,
“I have high hopes that we will have many wins this season, as well as a lot of fun! We all put forth our best effort and that shows on the court. The team chemistry is great and my teammates are very motivating.”
The new players seem eager for the season and Head Coach, Kelly Bethke, has high hopes for them as well as the season continues. Coach Bethke stated,
“I’m excited about this group of new players. They have improved the level of our program. They have great athleticism and ball control. They are fun and get along well with everyone. I am excited for the future!”
The rest of the team is also ready to make this a great season. Senior and team captain, Claire Martin said,
“I am most looking forward to winning conference games this year! Last year we were so close to being in the CCIW conference tournament but some uncontrollable factors like injuries hurt us tremendously. So this year we are planning to go all the way.”
The team plays at home against Central at 5:00 pm and Dominican at 7:00 pm on September 15.
