The Observer sat down with senior men’s golf captain Tanner Obal to discuss his ideas and time with the team, the end of the season, conference tournament hopes and more.
1. Why did you choose to come and play golf for Augustana?
“When I was looking at schools, I was looking at mostly smaller schools. Augustana was kind of a fit for me, but also I wanted to keep playing golf because that is something I really like to do. I was contacted by the coach, talked to him on the phone and sent him some emails back and forth. My first time visiting here, I was having nice conversation and I felt like it was a good fit not only in academics but also with the golf team. Everything has been great so far. I have made a lot of connections with people.”
2. How is this season going? How did the fall season prepare the team for the spring season?
“In the fall, we were playing very well. It was nice coming in second in our tournament out of a very large field. Going to spring break, I played pretty well. Our team was very decent as well. The last few weeks, we had a few good rounds, though we hadn’t been able to put together a good consecutive round. In the last week, we have got a lot better and be a little more consistent. We were looking forward to go into our final few events here, especially our last conference tournament.”
3. What were your expectations for this season?
“I wanted to make sure we kept improving. That is something, as a team, wee have been able to do, and even with myself. Also, we want to make sure to finish well in our last conference and leave a good impression for a lot of younger freshman. We also wanted to have good work ethics, not only with myself but also the rest of the team to be good examples that will carry on even after we graduate.”
4. As the senior, which game do you remember most and why?
“My freshman year, I shot a 69, which was the lowest score I had at Augie. Everything went right and it felt really good.”
5. What do you want the Augie community to know about the team?
“Golf is something that isn’t meant for everyone. But everyone should give a try because it teaches you a lot about yourself. You get bad breaks, you have good breaks, which is just like the good life. It teaches you patience and not to get frustrated.”
