More than 500,000 people marched on Jan 21. at the Women’s March on Washington in Washington D.C.
The march is one of hundreds of controversial marches happening across on each of the seven continents allowing an avenue for people to protest popular political rhetoric and challenge the U.S. government to increase devotion to women’s rights, just one day after the election of President Trump.
From equal pay, to the choice that one makes regarding her own body and other human and civil rights, people came from all over the world to march among women, men, and high profile names.
The march, which started at 1 P.M. drew massive crowds to a rally that began at 10 A.M.
Guests included Katy Perry, America Ferrera, Sophia Bush and Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.
An avid activist known around the world, Gloria Steinem, also made a guest appearance.
“The future completely depends on you.” Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood said in an exclusive interview with the Observer. “It’s incredible to see thousands of young people out today and were going to need to be marching for the next four years.”
Before 11 A.M., the Washington D.C. Metro system announced that they had already seen more riders on Saturday than they did the day before for the Inauguration of the President of the United States.
Many of the protestors were college aged.
Sophia Bush, recognizable for her roles in One Tree Hill and Chicago Fire also gave an exclusive message for college students.
“Make sure that you’re getting civically engaged on a local level.” said Bush.
Marches are happening around the world. A march in Chicago drew 250,000 people according to multiple sources. It is the second largest gathering outside of D.C. in the United States. The crowd there has gotten so large, that they cannot march.
Protests in Washington D.C. have been a mix of peaceful and violent. The city arrested more than people yesterday due to “civil unrest” following the inauguration of president trump.
Saturday morning, the national guard stood guard with Metro Police at the train stations. The protests were peaceful and the women and their supporters were energized and ready to march.
