Following the success of their previous two concerts, Augustana College will have its third Chamber Singers Spring Matinee this April 17 at 2:00pm in Wallenberg Hall.
This year’s concert is themed around pieces from the “American Songbook.”
Most of the tunes are classic songs from the early 1900s, comprising of madrigal, jazz, and barbershop choir selections.
The whole ensemble consists of 11 singers, who will be performing in both full and small groups.
There will be several male/female group pieces and three quartets, all of which performing songs chosen by the students.
The women of the Chamber Singers will be featuring renditions of old favorites such as “Sandman” and “Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy.”
The men will be singing barbershop quartet arrangements of “Daisy Bell/Bicycle Built for Two” and “Coney Island Baby.”
Unlike the previous years performances, this concert will also feature members of the jazz combo on stage with the singers to supplement the style of “all American, classic jazz pieces,” as described by senior John Whitson.
“We will be singing some arrangements that are more true to the original compositions as well as some vocal jazz arrangements that feature a small jazz combo,” said senior Dan Walls.
Through the exploration of familiar tunes such as “Embraceable You,” “Satin Doll,” “Georgia on my Mind” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” the Chamber Singers brings us back to the golden age of favorites such as Duke Ellington, Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday.
No matter if you plan on attending yourself, with friends, or with your family, the Chamber Singers Spring Matinee will offer the audience a chance to reminisce about the early days of iconic american Jazz and Swing.
“Those who attend can expect to feel uplifted by these light-hearted “gems” from America’s past,” said Whitson.
The concert is free to the Augustana community.
Ticket information can be found on Augustana Event Calendar website or through the Fine Arts department at augustana.edu/arts.
