Augustana Men’s golf is getting ready for their showdown against seven of the eight CCIW conference rivals this weekend for the top spot at the Midwest Region Classic.
The Midwest Region Classic will be in this weekend at Green Lake, Wisconsin.
Senior golfer, David Ferlmann, said the team will need to put a bit more together before the tournament.
“We’re still coming together,” Ferlmann said. “We lost four seniors but we’ve wound up being better than last year.”
Men’s golf coach Paul Del Veccio said that the team still has some more to work on besides coming together.
“We are still working on a few things, trying to tighten up short games and work on our putting,” Del Veccio said.
One of the ways Del Veccio wants to solve this problem is treating each day differently.
“We are working on trying to get back to hitting the delete button after the first round and starting from scratch,” Del Veccio said. “What happened yesterday has no effect on what we are going to do today. It doesn’t matter what you shot, we are starting over.”
Ferlemann remarked that the team has played strongly at the tournament in the past.
“We usually play pretty well, it’s a really good tournament with a lot of good teams,” Ferlmann said. “We faired pretty well last year, but couldn’t put it together down the stretch on the last day. We are all looking forward to it.”
Del Veccio said that the team is looking strong coming into this tournament.
“We are looking pretty good coming into that tournament,” Del Veccio. “the good thing about that tournament is that I’ll be able to take six instead of five.”
Del Veccio praised the members of his team for how well they’ve been doing so far this season.
“Everybody who’s been playing has been looking really good,” Del Veccio said. “”David Ferlmann, who’s our senior captain, he’s been leading the team and has been the most consistent so far. Tanner (Obal) has been up there as our number 1 and number 2 guy. And we’re getting some good help from Gabe Askam, along with Michael Jacobs. Then we have Alex Sierra, our freshman, he’s been right there too.”
Del Veccio said the team hasn’t played at these new courses, but will be ready.
“It’s a really nice course,” Del Veccio said. “We’ll get up there on Thursday and get a game plan together as far as how to play that golf course.”
