Visiting Artist to perform in Davenport

Singer-songwriter J.M. James combines blues, R&B and acoustic rock to create his unique sound. He will perform a collection of new and original songs as part of the Quad Cities Visiting Artist series.

James is a multi-instrumentalist and has been described as a mix of classic R&B singers, like Bill Withers, and modern pop singers, like Ed Sheeran. He will perform new songs from his EP, “Jukebox,” at the Redstone Room on Dec. 12, at 7 p.m.

James said “Jukebox” went on sale on Dec. 5 and features four songs with a contemporary pop sound.

“I didn’t really set out to make a dance record, but ‘Jukebox’ turned into that a bit, or at least part of it,” James said. “My intention with this EP was to discover some different sounds by writing to grooves and loops instead of just with my acoustic guitar, and also set a course for the future a bit, combining elements of blues, R&B and pop in search of a sound that is uniquely me.”

According to James’ official website, his mixture of different genres has earned him recognition in the entertainment world, along with his numerous covers that incorporate his own style with instruments such as a violin or guitar.

He has performed nationally, and for corporate clients, such as Gap and Converse. He also performed at the Country Music Awards in Nashville in 2012, according to his website.

The Nashville Songwriters Association International named James a “Writer to Watch” four times in 2014.

Tickets are on sale for James’ Redstone Room performance for $15. Tickets for students are $10.

James notes there is not much of an acoustic element in his newly released EP but goes on to say, “the acoustic element will definitely remain and be a part of future releases and shows.”
