Dez Cordas to perform on campus

Musical duo, Dez Cordas will bring an electric mix of music to campus on Sept. 30.
Guitarist Matthew Slotkin and double bassist Craig Butterfield will perform at 8 p.m. in Denkmann Memorial Hall. Both classically trained musicians will perform music composed by South American composer Astor Piazzolla, jazz pianist Chick Corea, Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. They will also perform original work.
“We are contemporary and have the privilege of premiering a lot of new composers work,” Slotkin said. “It is always exciting to perform the work of a living composer.”
Augustana is just one stop of their 7 city concert tour through the Midwest.
“I try to do the best job I can, and when I preform at a college, like Augustana, I hope that the students hear the beauty from a musician from a new or different area.” Slotkin said.
Both musicians come from a very highly respected musical background. Craig Butterfield is the associate professor of double bass and jazz studies at the University of South Carolina. Matthew Slotkin has appeared in leading venues on five continents.
“It’s the new people, meeting musicians with different backgrounds and learning about the musical culture from a new area” said Slotkin.
Mike Ramos, freshman, said he is normally narrow-minded about new types of music, but he is looking forward to Dez Cordas.
“Having groups like this on our campus is awesome, just because it gives us a taste of something new, and they take what could very easily be considered boring music and they make it fun again,” Ramos said. “It’s ideal for a college.”
