While R&B artist Rayvon Owen performs original songs off of his first official EP set to release this spring, he is also known for covering artists such as Katy Perry and Rihanna.
Sponsored by the Multicultural Programming Board (MPB), Owen will sing a combination of original songs and popular covers accompanied by keyboardist Ross Bridgeman, Saturday starting at 8 p.m. in the Center for Student Life Gävle room.
“I like to bring people together to have a good time,” Owen said. “I want people to sing, dance and laugh at the show, but also leave with something to really think about.”
Owen said he will perform a variety of recognizable covers, as well as creative mash-ups and songs he wrote himself.
“We usually use a piano and a machine which will have some looping and effects,” said Owen. “I’ll be laying down some harmonies live right there on stage with backup vocals, with Ross Bridgeman playing keys and helping with tracks.”
“The unique thing about (Owen), and why (MPB) is excited to bring him, is his passion and how much of a presence he shows on stage,” said Chris Huerta, MPB Co-Executive Director. “You instantly get drawn to him.”
Huerta said Owen reminds him of Bruno Mars because of his strong, soulful voice. When he saw Owen performing in Nashville, Tenn., Huerta said the audience was captivated immediately by his sound and lyrics.
“We booked (Owen) right off the back, that’s how much we liked him,” said Huerta. “I met him and he’s so down to earth , so nice, and wants to get to know you. He’s a perfect fit for Augustana.”
Raised in Richmond, Va., Owen said he started singing in church when he was 5 years old and never stopped.
Throughout middle and high school, he participated in choirs, where he learned a variety of musical genres.
Owen started writing music at Belmont University in Nashville, where he graduated last May with a degree in Commercial Music.
“I still feel like I’m in college, so it’s really nice to be able to play colleges,” said Owen. “I love the college market, they’re so receptive, ready to hear new artists and excited about new music.”
Owen said his first EP is set to be released in April. Updates on the release can be found on Owen’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
