The women’s basketball team has had a great season having a record of 12-9 so far. Augie will compete next against their CCIW competitor, the Elmhurst Bluejays. As the season is coming to an end, the players are reflecting on how they can defeat Elmhurst and continue to make a successful end to the 2017-18 season.
Senior, Victoria Allen, talked about her excitement going into this next CCIW game against Elmhurst.
“Personally, I am very excited going into the next CCIW game. Conference play is a lot of fun. Because, our conference is so competitive, it is always a toss-up who will win,” Allen said. “As a team, we are motivated and ready to play another game.”
At their last home event, the team had a close game against Carthage, losing 80-74, but the team is hoping to edge out Elmhurst in their next home match.
Junior, Sadie Roberts, expressed her views on how they can ensure a win against Elmhurst.
“The CCIW conference is one of the toughest conferences to compete in. Each game and team we compete against will be challenging in its own way. I think our team does a great job of focusing on one game at a time, as the coaches and players have been making adjustments based on our competitions playing style,” Roberts said.
Allen had similar views on how they can compete well against their CCIW opponent. Their normal strategy will remain the same, but they’ll make slight changes if necessary.
“For every conference game, we make slight adjustments to our style of play to combat what our opponent will do. However, our main principles stay the same. We aspire to stay disciplined on defense, work hard, do the little things, and always have fun,” Allen said.
As the season only has four games left, the team discuses how they feel about the previous season.
“I have had an absolute blast this season. My teammates are some of my closest friends on campus, and we always have fun playing together,” Allen said. “I feel blessed to be ending my basketball career with such compassionate and fun-loving girls. We still have several games left and I am excited to finish off the year strong.”
Roberts had a positive outlook as well and hopes to finish out the season on a positive note.
“So far, I’ve been happy with the way our team has played. We’ve had our ups and downs like many teams do, but the one thing that differentiates us is that we grow and learn from each game as a team. With this said, I’m looking forward to our upcoming games, as I think we’ve grown immensely as a team and are excited and focused on making it to the tournament and fighting until the end,” Roberts said.
The women will compete on February 3 at 7 pm against Elmhurst in the Carver Center in Rock Island, IL. This will be there second to last home game of the 2017-18 season.
