Women’s golf aim for top spots at CCIW tourney

The women’s golf team is getting ready for the CCIW tournament on Oct. 6 through 8. They will be playing in Plainfield, IL on the Naperbrook Golf Course. In the tournament, they will be competing against other teams in the CCIW conference.
The team’s head coach, Tom Lawrence, said the team will be prepared from their performance this season, as well as having experience at the course.
“The team is having a great season thus far,” Lawrence said. “We have played at Naperbrook several times and will be playing another practice round there this Sunday.”
Senior captain Jenna Stone agreed with her coach.
“the team has been doing really well,” Stone said. “We’ve won a couple of tournaments, and girls have placed in the top 10 in almost every tournament we’ve been in.”
Stone and Lawrence are hoping that the team finishes amongst the top three  in the upcoming match.
“Carthage and Illinois Wesleyan are the teams to beat.  We think we can be in a battle for the 3rd-4th spot,” Lawrence said. “Our expectation is to play our best and take it one shot at a time for the entire three days.”
Last year, the Vikings finished fifth in the fall CCIW Women’s Golf Championship in Decatur, Illinois as they shot 1067 after three rounds. Illinois Wesleyan were the victors last year, with Carthage finishing in second and North Central College in third.
Some of the top finishers that are returning from last year’s tournament are now junior and captain Jenna Lawrence, who finished second for the team and in 23rd place, sophomore Rachel Cheval who finished fourth on the team and tied for 28th and junior co-captain Korina Freidag, who also tied for 28th.
The Vikings are also looking to freshman Melanie Loeffler as sge has led the team for most of the season. This past weekend she led the Vikings to  second place finish at the Clarke Fall Invitational.
After the tournament, the team is planning to take a little time off to focus on the student part of being student athletes.
“I want the team to concentrate on finishing the first trimester strong academically, Lawrence said.”
