Men’s track preps for upcoming meet

Augustana men’s track and field has continued using their first-ever conference win to bolster their efforts in outdoor season as they prepare for their home meet, the Meet of Champions, on April 23.
Head coach Paul Olsen said the team is ready to perform well at their home invitational.
“First of all, we have a great team,” Olsen said. “We’ve got a lot of Blue Chip (high scoring) members this year.”
The Meet of Champions is considered to be what Olsen calls “The Big Meet,” because it will feature teams such as North Central, UW-Platteville and Carthage.
“This is one of the best Division III invitationals in the country this early in the year,” Olsen said.
The meet will not be scored as a regular meet, but according to senior and captain Joseph Strain, the coaches will tally up how well the athletes did in the meet.
“The coaches will take score of what it would be if we were scored in the meet, and we usually come out on top,” Strain said. “It’s a great measuring tool.”
While the meet may be used to judge the Vikings’ strength, it will be a big opportunity for the Vikings to test themselves against diverse competition.
“It’s called the Meet of Champions, because the teams that are invited have consistently placed in the top two of their respective conferences,” Olsen said. “These conferences come from Minnesota, Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa and Wisconsin.”
While they are not directly predicting a win during this meet—even though they won this meet past three years—the team is always “in the hunt to win.”
“Our goal is to always be on the hunt to win,” Olsen said. “Most weekends we will, but in every meet as a team and in every event individually we want to be on the hunt for a win.”
